About Us

Whether you are an experienced rugby player or a complete beginner, the Baltimore Flamingos offer a very welcoming, gay, and trans inclusive option to strengthen your fitness and be active in your community.

Our Teams

The Baltimore Flamingos has two sides. You can play on whatever side makes you feel the safest and most comfortable, or both, regardless of your sex or gender identity. The Filthy/Fierce and Feral sides train separately but warm up and cool down together.

"Our sport is rooted in a deep history of inclusion and the belief there is a position for everyone on the field and in our sport." (USA Rugby)

Filthy/Fierce

The Baltimore Flamingos have two teams for the Mens+ (MRFC) side of our organization, one for more experienced rugby players, and another for those who are still relatively new to the team. This allows us to compete with organizations around the region and beyond who are also establishing themselves and growing their teams.

Feral

The Baltimore Flamingos have now established the Ferals as their Womxns+ (WRFC) side with their inaugural Matrix Season beginning in Fall 2024. With many of our Ferals joining rugby for the first time in our formative years, we're working hard to build up the fundamentals to establish ourselves as a force in rugby.

The Baltimore Flamingos RFC started in early Summer 2016, the first and only LGBTQ+ inclusive rugby team in the state of Maryland. Proud to call Baltimore home, our name pays homage to John Waters' iconic Pink Flamingos.

As a member of International Gay Rugby (IGR), our mission is to, first and foremost, foster and cultivate a safe space for LGBTQ+ people to learn and participate in rugby.

Our journey has been marked by continuous growth and achievement. From our International Championship win of the Challenger’s Cup at the biennial Mark Bingham IGR Tournament (Ottawa, Canada 2022), to organizing the world's first all trans rugby match (Charlotte, NC, 2023), to  winning the inaugural NORAM Womxn’s+ Cup in 2025, we strive to build an environment of inclusivity and athleticism for all.

Started by a few misfits, our team has grown to over 80 players and over 2,500 supporters from all over the world. We have fostered countless friendships and an ever-growing group of alumni, active players, fellow ruggers, and supporters whose camaraderie continue to build our community.

Frequently Asked Questions

I don't know anything about rugby. Can I still join?

Yes! Many of our members join us without any knowledge of the sport. We begin each season with a 101 which is a perfect time to try it out. We will teach you the game!

I'm a more experienced player. Can I join?

Yes! We cater to all experience levels. You'll get the chance to play competitively as well as show other players the ropes.

I'm a non-binary or gender non-conforming player. How do I decide which team to join?

You get to choose which team you join, or both. You can also switch teams at any time. We have dozens of trans and non-binary people on our teams, so you won't be alone.

Is there a financial commitment?

If you plan to play in games, dues will be $80 per season. Dues keep the lights on, literally. We could not exist as a team without charging dues, but we try to keep the costs as low as possible and have options available for those that may not be able to afford our dues fee. We want players more than we want money, always. Dues are not due until 2 weeks after your first practice, so we welcome everyone to try a few practices out before making a financial commitment.

If you plan to play in games, you will also need to register with USA Rugby, which includes liability insurance/secondary health insurance. More information will be available if you choose to join.

What if I can't afford dues?

We have some financial assistance options, including payment plans and waivers. Please get in touch with us if you require financial assistance.

What gear do I need?

All players will need cleats (rugby or soccer), a mouthguard, and rugby shorts. If you plan to play games, you will need Flamingos rugby shorts, which will be available to purchase at practice. Our members can recommend cleats and mouthguards of various price points.

What is the schedule like?

We have two official seasons: Fall and Spring. Our Spring season is more travel and social, and our Fall season is more local and competitive.

Practices are on Tuesday and Thursday evenings, and games are on Saturdays, but not every Saturday. Check out information about our current season here.

What if I can't play any games but still want to get involved?

Good news! We have an option for social members. For $40 per season, you get other player perks such as: free food and drink after every game (home or away), a free end of season banquet ticket ($25 value), merch discounts, private Facebook group access, AND can practice with us as much as you want if you just want some exercise, along with some other surprises and freebies along the way.

What are your team values?

The Baltimore Flamingos endorses the following values: personal responsibility; good sportsmanship; honesty; respect for teammates, coaches, game officials, and opponents; fairness; inclusiveness, diversity and teamwork. We believe that rugby is an amazing game that should be played for fun and the challenge of competition. We hope that the Flamingos builds the foundation for a life-long love of the game. We believe that it is important that players, coaches, club supporters, representing the Club provide positive examples of behavior both on and off the field.
